The problem with sitting

The Putney Clinic osteopaths

In the Western and developing world, sedentary life, particularly in the workplace is on the increase. We spend long periods of time sitting at desks and computers, driving vehicles, flying and generally being more sedentary. This has contributed to the dramatic increase in back pain. The latest analysis of back pain statistics conducted in 2004, reveals that 80% of adults will experience back pain at some point in their lives, requiring treatment. 5 million working days were lost due to back pain in 2004, the cost to employers was estimated at £624 million. The total cost to the NHS(Treatment, medication etc) was estimated at close to £1 billion. The cause of back pain is complex and multifactorial. However, poor posture while sitting is a major cause.

The human spine is a complex piece of engineering, that is designed to be active. Prolonged sitting places our spinal discs under strain. The discs are like sock absorbers between our vertebrae and have a "jelly like" substance inside them. A slumped sitting posture can increase disc pressure by as much as 190%. This gradually weakens the tough outer ligament called the Annulus and can lead to the development of disc herniations(also known as a "slipped disc"). The secret to reducing disc pressure is to encourage a good lumbar lordosis (The opposite to a slump- curving the low back inwards).Ergonomic chairs (Low back support) and desks, combined with postural awareness and keeping fit, will help keep your spine and discs healthy.

Clive,
you should set up a link to a backstore that has the right products eg chairs and desks. They are quite expensive, so people are unsure if its the right thing. But if a professional like you approved or recommended them, I would be more inclined to buy the relevant products

Thank you for your comment. At present, we are talking to chair suppliers and hope to have some news as soon as possible.
