Adapting yoga practices or starting yoga during pregnancy can be very beneficial to pregnant women. All schools of yoga agree that deep breathing exercises and meditation help soothe and empower pregnant women for the great journey that lies ahead of them. Connecting with the breath whilst toning and strengthening the body can allow women to feel more in control of their bodies. This practice of breathing, stretching and relaxing can bring about feelings of well-being and contentment - centring the mind and aligning the body - enables one to draw on greater energy reserves which, along with breath control, can be carried into labour and beyond.
Many yoga poses can help to relieve some of the common ailments associated with pregnancy such as: backache, tiredness, heartburn, etc... It can also be useful to woman with mechanical issues such as Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction (SPD) and sacroiliac joint problems.
