Cranial osteopathy

Clare MacDonald - Registered Osteopath and Cranial Osteopath

Cranial Osteopathy is a refined and subtle type of Osteopathic treatment that encourages the release of stresses and tensions throughout the body, including the head. It is a gentle yet extremely effective approach and may be used to treat a wide range of conditions in people of all ages. Cranial Osteopathy is increasingly being considered as a treatment of choice for some conditions caused by a difficult birth.

The following conditions are appropriate for treatment:

  • A baby who is uncomfortable and has a feeling of pressure in the head may be very
  • irritable and cry.
  • Tension in the bony and membranous casing of the skull keeps the baby`s nervous system in a persistently alert state and results in sleep disturbances.
  • Feeding may be difficult if there are "mechanical" stresses through the head, face
  • and throat. Nerves to the gut and tongue may be irritated as they exit from the skull
  • making the gut irritable and suckling difficult.
  • Regurgitation of milk and wind may be due to tensions or distortions in the diaphragm.
  • Other conditions that may be helped in older children and adults include, ear
  • infections, sinus and dental problems, headaches and asthma.
